I completely agree with you. One of the first things I do on a new Mac is 
change VoiceOver so text to the right of the cursor is spoken. I would love to 
see such an option offered in iOS as well.
Use what works for you. I switch it because speaking what's to the right of the 
cursor is standard screen reader practice. It's what I'm used to and I see no 
advantage in it being different.
To me, this is absolutely a matter of personal preference. There's no right or 
wrong way and props to Apple for offering the choice.
