This is correct. I use this setup on my MacMini. Apple has had the
optical output in the headphone jacks for many years. You'll get full
5.1 surround sound off a DVD playing on your mac this way. The keywords
to search for are "mini toslink" which is the optical connector that is
shaped like a little headphone jack. You can get cables with that on one
end and the more typical square connector to go into your sound system.
Mine is an ancient Denon that keeps working after 15 years. You'll have
to make sure you've picked the optical input on your sound system but
the Mac should just automagically start sending all audio to the digital
output when you plug in the cable. One downside is that the volume will
no longer be controlled on the Mac with the volume up/down keys since
you're now in the digital realm. Apps like iTunes that have volume
controls will still do their thing but there is no longer a system
volume. When I first set it up nobody knew what I was talking about when
I went to the usual electronics stores, including one high end one. So
online was really the only source for this otherwise cheap cable. Here
is one example of the cable from Newegg for US $4:

Hi,
The iMac has a combo digital/analog output through the headphone jack similar
to the one in the Airport Express. So, as long as you have the adaptor to go
from the 3.5 connection to the digital connection, it will work without an
issue. These adaptors can be found through Amazon and many other places. You
want a 3.5 mm to TOSLink converter which can either just be a small 3 or 4 cm
long adapter or can be a cable with those connectors at each end. I found one
for about $6 Canadian dollars earlier this year. I think it cost me as much to
ship as the silly adaptor.
HTH.

You may keep it on list. I am interested in this case.

OK Greg, What type audio connecters do we have on the back of the IMac? Let's
start there.
You probably can get an adapter. The only concern though I'd have is, you
might also need to get a converter. The reason is because you will need some
way to convert the analog signal from the IMac to a digital signal. I'm an
audio engineer, so if you'd like to write me off list, I'll try to help you
further.

Subject: iMac digital output
Hi list,
I have a 2015 iMak 5K and I would like to connect it up to my Logitech T H X
speaker system that I have via a digital optical connection. Does anyone know
how I could do this? There isn’t a digital output on the back of the machine.
