Yes, You're right. Normally it in fact should be possible, if you do a full 
restore and are able to disable Find my iPhone OK.
My memory got a bit clouded because last week I got myself into a state where 
DFU mode was the only way out. It's certainly useful to know about DFU mode in 
case that kind of thing occurs.
