It is not necessary either to be in DFU mode or to press shift+Space on Restore 
in order to install a new iOS beta build. The only time one needs to go about 
this is when downgrading from a beta to a previous build. This is all covered 
in my Testing Testing audio presentation for those who are interested.
The original poster has it correct, you can just Option-click the Check for 
Updates button, which brings up an open file dialog. And as has been said here 
by others, shift+Space on that button is a substitutes that works, in both Mac 
and Windows.
