On my Macbook Air, I've not seen any degradation of performance with File Vault 
running.
At least on this machine, I now need to press command-F5 to get speech at the 
log-in screen, and it only comes through the speaker, not headphones. But I 
don't really need speech to log in, and I'm happy to pay that small price for 
the significantly better security of my data.
