You don't need to select the column before hiding or un-hiding it. You just 
need to have navigated to a column (i.e. have any cell in a column selected) 
before you hide the column.
You can hide the column either in the table menu or in the context menu (which 
you open with VO-shift-m).
To unhide a column, from within any cell in the table, select unhide all 
columns from the table menu.
Once you have a column hidden, navigate with the arrow keys alone to move 
through only visible columns/cells. Use the VO keys plus arrow keys to navigate 
to hidden columns, but be warned you won't be able to edit hidden columns.
