1. Open System Preferences.
2. Open iCloud.
3. Interact with the iCloud services table, check the mail chek box and stop interacting.
4. Follow any further instructions.

This was a well known issue with the early releases of Mavericks but I
believed that this had been fixed by Apple in a subsequent update to the OS.
Certainly I am having absolutely no issues with G mail in my latest version of
Mavericks.
Could I ask both of you whether you have gone to the Apple Menu and selected
check for software updates to see if you are both running the latest version of
Mavericks available?

If you are running the latest version of Mavericks and this has still not
sorted the problem then for whatever reason the patch Apple issued has not
taken affect on your systems.
If this is the case then the easiest way to resolve this may be a re-install or
a clean install.
The good news is that on the Mac this is a much easier and simpler exercise to
complete than on Windows but check for whether you have the latest updates
first.
