I think this would be a whole lot easier if mail.app would support external, 
rather than inline attachments but that is probably more an issue with outgoing 
mail more so than receiving. But still, I usually prefer to use the main menu 
bar and select File -> Save Attachments and work from there; not sure how it 
does with multiple attachments. When doing this, I am saving the file out of 
Mail and then dealing with it from Finder or whatever.

I prefer this approach because viewing attachments from within mail clients or 
web browsers often brings out accessibility issues and probably even more 
important, security problems can often be avoided if files are dealt with 
externally. I never like to open attachments from within emails. This is 
especially the case with executable files.
