I remember being able to work with WIFI networks from recovery mode. Now I'm just trying to remember how I did it. I know it's possible to use the window and application choosers once you get VO running. Sorry I can't be of more help, but I distinctly remember doing an Internet install. My network was hidden, so I had to enter the name and password. This was from within the install utilities.
