Hi,

If the update has already been applied, there'll be a receipt in the system, 
thus, you won't be able to re-apply it from the AppStore.  You can usually 
download the stand-alone updater from Apple Support site or you can restart the 
computer while pressing down cmd-r.  This will put the computer into recovery 
mode from which you can choose to re-install the system.  I suggest that you 
see what you can find on the web for the stand-alone updater and go from there.

Alternatively, you could repair her disk permissions, which is found by opening 
Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder.  This process often fixes problems 
similar to this.
