If you go the SuperDuper route, and you want the ability to use your external drive as a bootable drive - something I do - the drive will have to have Firewire connectivity. You can't boot from a USB drive as far as I know. I use the LaCie drives, they're good product and you can get them in firewire/USB. Also, you can get a Firewire800/thunderbolt adaptor to make the connection to your mac.
