Actually, another trick to viewing messages in the preview pane is to just press the tab key when you are interacting with the messages table. So when you're on a message of interest, just press tab to view it, then when you are done, press shift tab. You will be back in your messages table, and at least with Snow Leopard, voice over will still be interacting with the table. I find this a great way to view messages, but to each their own.
