I think tapping into the rest of the phone is hard for them as each manufacturer supposedly has a proprietary way of using the earpiece. Those earbuds you have to use suck because they're too big to get in the ear comfortably so you have to sort of jam them in sideways, or I do anyways, and then they start to want to come out.
