You know sometimes the automatic mode although nice could really cause  
you grief.  A good case in point is if you happen to replace some  
lower quality files with higher quality files, but did not remove the  
lesser files first.  Problem becomes expecting iTunes to know which  
you would rather keep or get rid of .  Now there is a script that will  
go through your library and determine which entries are invalid and  
remove those and maybe that is what your looking for.  THis is  
available on the Doug Scripts site, but I don't have that URL handy.
