There are instructions on gmail for just this type of thing.

one thing to note is that if you have multiple gmail accounts you must
setup a
separate smtp server with each accounts details or you will be able to
recieve
from all accounts but only send via the one you setup.

I use Mail almost exclusively like this and have over 50 rules for
sorting my
various newsletters, post replys, family stuff and may others.

Check the settings link then Forwarding POP & Imap tab.  you have to
turn on pop to be able to use mail and there are config instructions
for that too.
I personally recommend "archive gmail's copy" after pop download this
way i can search my mail even if i'm not at my MBP.
