The nice thing about Matrix is that it does not need to be exclusive. MacPorts can maintain a Matrix room (e.g. #macports:matrix.org) that can bridge to e.g. #macports on freenode (despite all the recent hoopla, I don't think Freenode is going anywhere and there's no reason to pull the rug out from under people who choose to stay) as well as #macports on liberachat or elsewhere. There is even a Matrix/RocketChat bridge [1].
