Oh well, I can't reproduce it any longer. I tried several times yesterday and failed, eventually resorting to the hack I described. Today, of course, the direct conversion from within Lyx worked liked a charm. I suppose it'll go down in my book as another Lyx mystery. I have more files to convert in the next few days. I'll post a short example is something goes wrong again.
