Guys, I am frustrated. I have installed Lyx using both the Alt version and also the newly posted installer and have had all sorts of difficulties.
Basiscally things that did work on V1.6.1-1 now don't on V1.6.2-1. For example with the Alt installer during install it cannot find the Miktex distribution and the path to it has to be manually set. Once installed then when I load up files that have PDF graphics they are not rendered correctly on the screen — there is a lot of extra space around them. If I generate a PDF output file this problem is also retained in the output. These files work perfectly on the V1.6.1-1, and there is definitely nothing wrong with the PDF files themselves. I must admit I don't understand how any changes made to fix bugs could affect the operation of this. I thought I would try the recently posted windows installer. This installer at least correctly finds the Miktex distribution and sets up the correct path during the install. However, when I load up an existing Lyx file containing EPS diagrams the Lyx environment says that there is an error in converting to a loadable format and nothing shows in the Lyx environment. It is not a problem with finding the files, but somehow calling Ghostscript goes wrong and is generating an error. I have checked the paths to the Ghostscript files and they are OK. Again these files work perfectly on the previous version. All of the above have been tried on Windows Vista 32bit and Windows XP x64 systems, and similar problems occur. Therefore I don't believe it is due to a problem with the machine configurations. I have not bothered looking for other issues, since the above problems alone mean that the software is unusable (for me anyway). >From the user list there appear to be a lot of people using V1.6.2-1, and I have not seen mention of the problems mentioned above. I cannot understand this as the above problems emerge as soon as the software is installed and one loads existing files containing either PDF diagrams or EPS diagrams. Therefore from my experience it would seem that there are major problems with V1.6.2-1. Based on my experience I would recommend, at the moment, that users who have EPS or PDF diagrams in their Lyx files not to use it. If I am totally off the planet with the above problems, or I am doing something really stupid, please let me know. I find Lyx a very useful software product, but unfortunately the latest version has proved to be a real problem for me. Thanks for putting up with the gripe.
