so i started writing a minimal lyx file to show the issue
and noticed that the problem went away.
i tracked it down to this preamble directive:

\usepackage[scaled=0.75]{beramono}

which points then to a font issue.

now on another machine i don't have this problem.
i'm guessing the difference is the specific package that supplies
this font.

i'll be looking for the right package..
