I think it should be a kind of "portal page" that point people to the right group of wiki pages, preferably with a picture/icon for each group to make it easier to navigate and to understand the content.

The introduction can be limited to a single sentence like "Welcome to the LyX wiki. This is a community site where LyX users can share information about LyX and related software. The [help page] explains you how to contribute.".
