[sorry for the repost -- previous mail did not reach the list?] Thanks, Paul, for the detailed reply.
I decided to try a brand new install, Linux + LyX (I'm testing... I can afford this) Linux is now Ubuntu 8.04 alpha 2 (testing again). LyX is 1.5.2., installed with Synaptic. I found a (meta)package called "texlive-all". I installed it. (Before it was Tetex, as suggested in an older post, but I more or less understood Texlive is newer and supersedes it). texlive-all does include texlive-extra-utils. I also installed the imagemagick package. I tried, as you suggested, "which epstopdf" in a terminal. The output, "/usr/bin/epstopdf", looks good AFAIK. Now to the testing results: - PS previewing is perfect. - PDF previewing gives the following error: An error occurred while running epstopdf --outfile='0_home_daniel_Images_intpar0.p --outfile='1_home_daniel_Images_intpar1.p BUT the previewing is fine! The error occurs only the first time the document is PDF-previewed. Even if it is modified, I get no other error message unless I restart LyX. I assume something must be slightly wrong in the EPS->PDF converter setup (command line is epstopdf --outfile=$$o $$i) However, it's almost OK for previewing PDF. BUT... - DVI previewing now gives some trouble. Previewing takes place in Evince (good! it's much nicer than Tetex's XDVIK), but some (math) characters are missing: integral signs, uppercase Greek and miscellaneous symbols. Moreover, the graphics are missing, replace by a thick black frame... Well, I feel like I'm making progresses... This LyX install is almost usable (if I print from PS rather than DVI). Yet, I'd like to get everything right... but I guess that will wait until 2008. Thanks again for the help and happy new year to all list members, Daniel
