You can update your ecisting MikTeX 2.6 installation to get the latest LaTeX-packages in any case. To do this, use MiKTeX's update program in the Windows Start Menu. This program is executed in by the complete and small installer. I forgot to build in this feature also in the update installer, the next update installer version (for lyX 1.5.4) will have this. So I have to correct myself: MiKTeX 2.6 cannot be updated to MikteX 2.7, but MiKTeX 2.6 can be updated itself to get the latest LaTeX-package versions.
