Hello,
I decided to upgrade to LyX 1.5.2 from 1.4.4 and have encountered the
problem of having fuzzy screen fonts as described by a few other
people on the list. The reason that I wanted to bring back this topic
on the thread is because there seemed to be a consensus that the
problem was only happening on Mac PPC. However, I'm running OSX
10.4.10 intel. Attached are images of what I see on my screen for the
two versions of LyX. I'm definitely puzzled as to why 1.5.2. is not
crisp and clear as in 1.4.4. It's definitely harder to read and I
won't continue to use 1.5.2. if I can't resolve this fuzziness.
Unfortunately, I didn't find a solution within this thread so I was
wondering if any updates or new progress has been made with the fuzzy
screen fonts?
Yes, we realize it's a problem on Intel as well. (It's a matter of
whether anti-aliasing gets used or not. The issue arose in trying to use
a font cache to speed things up -- something I believe is needed on PPC
Macs -- which had the side effect of disabling anti-aliasing.)
Only sub-pixel anti-aliasing.
I'm not sure what current thinking on a solution is. (Abdel? ... Anyone?)
Unfortunately there's no simple solution. I suggest that you provide a
1.5.2 package with the cache disabled. Then people will have to decide
if the application is fast enough for their needs and choose one of the
two package.
Hopefully matters will improve with 1.5.3.
In the meantime, you might
try 1.5.1: I believe that version is unaffected (but I'm not sure).
Indeed, 1.5.1 is not affected. But I'd prefer that you provide a new
1.5.2 package (same thing for Windows packagers).
We are still discussing the issue for 1.5.3. This might become a
preference settings.
