Yes, the two versions of LyX are using different versions of Qt:

LyX 1.5.0beta2 uses Qt 4.2.3
LyX 1.5.1 uses Qt 4.3.0

So the problem is with Qt.

Hi,

On Mac OS X, starting from LyX 1.5.0rc1, and carrying through to
1.5.1, the italic Times font appears as slanted upright Times font on
the screen, instead of true italic. This problem did not occur on
earlier versions, including 1.5.0beta2. See the attached screen
snapshot. The same happens with Times New Roman.

Is this a known bug? I couldn't find it on bugzilla.lyx.org.

Could it be the use of a different Qt version?

running LyX.app/Conents/MacOSX/lyx --version from the console should
give you this information (is there a LyX>About Qt too? I do not remember).
