Wolfgang,
You can run RC2 in its own directory without touching your
installation. Just
compile the source with "configure" and "make" but do not install. The
executable will be in
src/lyx
within the LyX source directory.
As usual, remember not to save important documents with RC2 as the
stable
version won't be able to open them.
