Now matter how portable - you still need pdf reader software. On linux there are several alternatives, some may be better than others. Some do a bad job with bitmap fonts, in particular. A pdf without all fonts embedded isn't portable, it assumes the readers have access to these fonts. Now, there are some fonts that most people have, but you can't depend on it. There are linux machines without "Arial", fopr example.

Looks fine using xpdf on my machine, while it looks awful using acrobat 5.0.5. Helge Hafting
