Forgive me if this is OT, but I was reminded of it it by your post.

Red Hat just released replacements for the common Microsoft proprietary fonts:
https://www.redhat.com/promo/fonts/
including replacements for TimesNewRoman, Aerial and CourierNew.

The second release towards the end of the year will include the full
hinting necessary for perfect presentation.

Anyway, a bit irrelevant to the OP, but I've been waiting for this for
a while and wanted to share it!
