With the first release of lyx on Windows I build a home-cooked fully
contained lyx + miktex distribution in a single zip-file. Moving from a

Why can't it be that easy with the new Lyx bundle at
http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/Windows?
This is NOT easy because extracting some files does not set up a proper system.
If you really want to have a RAR-file will all needed files, then have a look at the LyXWinInstaller
that is mentioned at the wiki-page above. Download the file "LyXWinInstallerPackage.rar" and you
have what you want.
Note that you need to execute the MiKTeX-installer manually because MiKTeX needs to set up registry
values. The same if for the installers of JabRef and GSview.
But be aware that Aspell won't work, you have to set up the PATH_PREFIX in LyX's preferences
manually, the same with the file converters, viewing EPS-files inside LyX will not work, ...
It somehow does everything
automatically, e.g. gets missing parts of MikTex etc. I don't like that,
since you don't always have an internet connection, especially on travels
and it is somehow stupid to download and launch the installer on every
computer you have at home and then download the necessary MiKTeX packages.
What is the problem? You normally install LyX one time on your laptop and can
then travel with it.
Even worse, when working with Lyx and you use some special Latex features,
sometimes Lyx needs to download these missing featrues - this is
user-unfriendly and annoying.
You can install all available LaTeX-packages via MiKTeX before you start
traveling.
But what would you expect? That the installer has now instead of 75MB 350MB? There is for good
reasons no longer a MiKTeK complete installer available. Nobody needs every LaTeX-package, so he can
download what he needs.
Therefore, I suggest that there is a big lyx distribution in the form of a
single zip-file or CD .iso that contains really everything - MikTex
(everything) + Lyx + pdf viewer + etc.
Note that neither GSview nor Adobe Reader can be shipped on a CD due to license
restrictions.
I guess it is difficult it would also
be beneficial to have an lyx-.iso distribution which you simply mount and
start working - a.k.a. PortableLYX.
You are welcome to create one.
