Hi Stefano, after i sent my last message i looked again in the ...lyx/doc directory and detected the reference manual. It's just not shown by Help. There i found the command-execute command to access the mini-buffer.
BUT, unfortunately this does not work for me. putting 'accent-circumflex a' in the minibuffer produces the same strange behaviour of the cursor in my lyx (seemingly a blank + a somewhat bigger white space) as entering '^ a' directly. Trying the same with 'lyx -dbg key' doesn't give more info because what is inputted in the mini-buffer is not traced by the debug function.
