Hello LyXers,

I just released version 2.5 of my LyX/LaTeX-Installer LyXWinInstaller.
It can be downloaded frome here:

https://developer.berlios.de/project/showfiles.php?group_id=5117&release_id=10626

the sourcecode from here:

https://developer.berlios.de/project/showfiles.php?group_id=5117&release_id=10625

An overview about the installer can be found at:

http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/LyXWinInstaller

Changelog:

- updated to Imagemagick 6.2.8-8
- updated to MiKTeX 2.5
- updated to AFPL Ghostscript 8.54
- update of the Aspell spellchecker
- new method to view/update PDF output when you're using Acrobat or
  Adobe Reader:
Now the PDF needn't to be closed before it can be updated. See
  http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/LyXWinTips#toc1
  for details.
- installer asks now if you want to update MiKTeX after it is installed
- MiKTeX is now configured so that the automatic installation of missing
LaTeX-packages is enabled for all users on the computer
- the math fonts needn't no longer be installed as LyX 1.4.2 uses
automatically the fonts in its \Resources\fonts subdirectrory

Known problems:

- All toolbar buttons are disabled after you've opened a dialog;
they are reactivated when you click in the text (see LyX's bug #2423)
- The executable "lyx.exe" has no LyX icon (see LyX's bug #2708)
- menu Document -> LaTeX-protocol is broken (see LyX's bug #2687)
- The printout of Lyx's new configure script isn't shown so that you
don't get an information when LaTeX-packages needed by LyX are
downloaded and installed. This could lead to a situation that LyX
doesn't respond for a long time when it is first started.

The main new feature of this release is the new MiKTeX 2.5. MiKTeX 2.5 comes with a new version of Yap, its DVI-viewer that can now correctly display nearly all PostScript-specials like colored, scaled, and rotated text.
MiKTeX 2.5 supports now filenames and path with spaces.
Under the hood it is better customziable by command line parameters that are used by LyXWinInstaller to configure it to work perfectly together with LyX.

MiKTeX 2.5 is only part of the complete version of the installer and will only be installed when no LaTeX-distribution can be found. MiKTeX 2.5 can manually be installed side by side to MiKTeX 2.4. LyXWinInstaller recognizes both versions but will use version 2.5 if possible.

It is recommended to set write permissions to MiKTeX 2.5's install folder and subfolders for all users on a PC to let the users benefit from the automatic LaTeX-package installation of MiKTeX (known bug of MiKTeX which we are working on).

Another important change is the new method of viewing PDF-files. Most Win users use Adobe Reader or Acrobat to view PDF-files. These programs prevents modifications of opened PDF-files so that you currently have to:
- export the PDF from LyX
- open the PDF in Acrobat/Adobe Reader
- make changes in LyX
- close the PDF
- export the PDF from LyX again
- press the "Previous view" button in Acrobat/Adobe Reader to reopen the
PDF at the position you have been when you closed it

Now you can:
- view the PDF from LyX (there is a corresponding button in the toolbar)
                        (Acrobat/Adobe Reader will automatically be
                         opened)
- make changes in LyX
- view it again from LyX (don't use update->view)
- press the "Previous view" button in Acrobat/Adobe Reader to change to
the position in the PDF you viewed when updating the PDF

Future of LyxWinInstaller:

Starting last autumn I provided LyXWinInstaller to be able to easily install a complete LaTeX-environment based on LyX as textprocessor. Although the installer was never the official one it attracted the attention of many new users to LyX. Now that LyX 1.4.2 has an appropriate Windows installer I will start to merge my installer project with it to let further LyX-installers benefit from my work.

This LyXWinInstaller version is not published to vie with the official LyX installer! It is released for support reasons, to use the new MiKTeX configuration functionality that was built in especially for my installer, and to keep up the progress of customizing LyX for the needs of the users. I got many emails with complaints about the view->PDF problem that is now solved. I hope that other adjustments to the toolbar:
http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/UserInterface#LyXWinInstallerToolbar
will be added to further LyX releases as they are the result of feedback from Lyx-users. (The same for the PDF-cropbox recognition feature that was built into Imagemagick especially for LyX.)

best regards Uwe
