There is already a precedent for this: LyX ignores extra white space after 
a period. This is useful because many typists once learned to type two 
spaces before beginning a new sentence (as we all know) and LyX 
effectively "corrects" this condition. I could see the same thing being 
included as an option ("Ignore white space before following punctuation: 
[                ]") under Layout->Document. True, even now you can do 
your own F/R for this condition (same thing goes for double spaces after 
the period), but why not make life a little easier.
