Thank you for your reply. Now I can see the figures in DVI. (well, actually my original file was somehow damaged. I can only copy all the text and start a new file. Then it works).
p.s. Pity that LyX tutorial from help menu did not tell me this.

I don't know what the error means exactly, but have you tried adding a figure float and putting the graphic inside the float? I believe that to be the "standard" way that lyx handles graphics, so you might try that first.
