That's right. You've clicked the subfigure checkbox in the graphic 
inset dialog, haven't you, but haven't actually added a subfigure 
caption in the space next to it.

Why not try and View->DVI the lyx file I posted. Look at page two...

If you were to look at the generated latex, you'd see that the "ERT 
way" and the "do it all in the graphic inset way" produce identical 
output. The difference being, of course, that I can add a label inset 
and you cannot.
