I have finally installed Linux on my machine (Mandrake 9.2) and I have also installed LyX. (I wish I had installed Linux ages before, but I was a bit incredulous.) Unfortunately, the mathematical symbols appear as their LaTeX code. I am sure that it is a problem caused by some fonts missing. Could somebody here please give some guidance to this novice Linux user?
I have found by myself how to solve the problem: I have just installed the fonts latex-xft-fonts-0.1-1.noarch.rpm (available at ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/1.3.3/). (I am writing here the solution because it may help somebody in the future.)
