it is even worse. It seems as if {natbib} doesn`t accept a german Umlaut in keywords.

yes, maybe problematic too. I have no working 1.3.X here, but in 1.4 the problem is LyX, not LaTeX. I get
blah see section schön\ref{sec:sch=F6n}. and see schön
\citet{schn:1918}both were inserted as "schön"
