No expert, but I have had quite a few problems there too.

I'm not so sure you have the Xkeyboard set up right. Did you use the
correct character codes? Those are not the ones from Windows! I have
defined a Multikey (Compose key) and I can compose all Spanish characters
correctly. Compose ' a  gives me á

Also, did you check the LANG setting? Some locales have other characters
mapped
