Unfortunately, those strings are hardcoded in the bibtex style files and don't recognize babel. You must either look for a french bst file, create one with custom-bib or edit your bst file. For the latter, save a copy of the bst file and change the strings "and", "PhD thesis" and so on inside the bst file. The relevant strings are inside quotes. There's also a package "babelbib" on CTAN which supports several languages (including french), even for individual entries, but you have to chose their bst files. http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/biblio/bibtex/contrib/babelbib/ HTH, Juergen
