If you're using a (fairly recent) koma class, you can use
\setcapwidth[alignment]{width}
(have a look at scrguide, section 3.6)
Else the package caption2 provides a command \captionwidth

At the beginning of the caption text:
Insert->Short Title
The short title will be used for headings and lof/lot.
