Gahr...  8 MB is definitely too small for recent LyX. Maybe you get it
started (I even doubt this using a recent distribution) but there is no
way to work e.g. on the UserGuide on such a machine.

I have LyX 1.3.x (xforms) running on a P133 with 64 MB unter fvwm. This is
"ok" for "light workload", i.e. the occasional letter or 10 page paper....

Almost every conversion to .lyx goes through .tex ...
