I have a P166 and I don't have a problem with lyx. I use the xforms
version. Of course it is much slower than on the 1GHz at work, but it
works fine. However you should take care and remove all other
applications you don't need to run. For example don't run Gnome or KDE
if you can as they will eat your RAM and then you are left swapping with
lyx. XFCE (http://www.xfce.org) is an alternative. The new version 4
looks real nice, but remember that all the Gtk 2.x based programs use
more RAM than the old Gtk 1.2 based.

Don't know. Perhaps try abiword and see if it can save as some other
format that you can convert into lyx.
