How can I put \mathrm in mathmode?

If I made a 1^x (like a house-number in my country), I typed "1 C-m ^ (to
rise up) then x (as subscript)". Without \mathrm x is in italic. I tried
to write \mathrm{x} inside the box, after moving the cursor or enter, the
\mathrm is disappeared and x is still in italic (if viewing as ps/pdf). In
previous version (1.1.6fix4) has not been happened.

Thank you very much for your response...
