After taking Herbert's suggestion and adding a file article.layout to ~/.lyx with the content DefaultStyle Standard I get one less error, but still can't open a file and file new causes a crash.
I installed the program by: getting the CVS, running autogen, then ./configure with frontend=xforms and with pspell.
