Indeed. Thank you. 

Psfrag offers a nice way to ensure, that the appropriate font is chosen
(i.e. the same as in the main document) it is fairly straightforward and it
is nicely documented in the file pfgguide, that comes with the package.

Now back to the original question: LyX places the picture-to-be-resized in a
resizebox, e.g.:

  {\centering \resizebox*{0.8\textwidth}{!}{\includegraphics{mtf.eps}} \par}

This means, the resize is done after the "printout" of the graphic
(inclusive its Text) and the Text fonts are resized as well.
This is also true for both, xfix and psfrag replacements.

BTW: the

  {\centering <some thing> \par}
  
  construct is the one that makes reimporting of LyX documents fail, as
  relyx renders this as ERT (and muddles a following caption)
