In my LyX 1.1.6 its "Alt-M M" or "Ctrl-M" for entering math mode (seems like
a misspelling in the first answer)

again, Alt-M M or Ctrl-M.

By this method, your super- subscripts will by default be of normal size. To
get smaller ones, you can (still in math-mode, blue box) do Alt-c r (or
Alt-z r on German localization) for "Character-layout roman". Math mode
will prevent you from input of special chars, though.
