It works pretty well but will need some manual tuning sometimes. Some of
the most annoying limitation I found are:

- Lists of items often get split (eg, instead of aving one list of 5
elements we got five list of one element), this has toi be corrected
manually.

- Structured headers (chapters, etc) are rendered only by visual layout
(so you'll have to go through your documents to convert some text items
back to some headers stuff.

- Image converting is not always accurate.

I dont know if thoses problems could comes from Word itself, it's years
since I last edited an MSword doc...

The problem I see is that you'll get a document full of visual tags and
strange stuff... If you can, maybe it's better to start a new doc in lyx
and copy/pastle only the text from your original doc.

You can export to HTML, but not (AFAIK) XML. on the other hand, you can
create sgml documents in DocBook (or LinuxDoc) formats directly from Lyx.

You can export Latex to PS or PDF, PDF is a good choice for Win user, I
think.

I mostly use pure LaTeX when wanting to edit LaTeX, except for short docs
(like a letter) or drafts (where I edit text, put pictures but not for
publishing). But ppl I know use it even to write a complete PhD thesis.

On the other hand, I heavily use Lyx for SGML editing.
