jpg/png images

hi, as far as I know, the only supported format for images is eps.
What to do in order to put an other type of image, for example jpg?
I tried to save it as .eps within GIMP but (maybe it's a problem of my
installation) no such filter
was found.
Does the new release maybe support such images?
