Right. RevTeX4 uses natbib (internally), but in numeric mode. In this case, the year is not really used. Still, it needs to be given _if_ real author-number citations are employed, but an empty year suffices, as in "Meyer et al.()Meyer, Schmidt, and Higgins" or "Meyer()". Otherwise the natbib parser get confused and the author is not detected.
