Hiya!
I am helping my girlfriend convert a Word document to LyX. It's working
beautifully so far, but we hit a snatch.
We are making a table. When we copy the cell contents of the Word table
(text which includes some newlines) LyX is spreading the text out over
multiple rows.
How can we prevent this behavior?

Have you tried the LaTeX export function in LibreOffice? You have to
install the Writer2Latex extension first:
https://extensions.libreoffice.org/en/extensions/show/writer2latex
Load the file in Word, then File> Export, and choose LaTeX as the
format. You'll get all kinds of options. In my experience, Ultra-Clean
is the way to go.
The pandoc program will also do Word --> LaTeX.
Either way, then import the LaTeX file into LyX.
