I also strongly agree with you! I think it is possible to fix this, and my
feeling is it isn't that hard (although I'm often wrong on this). I outlined a

but did not get any feedback on it.
@LyX developers: It would be nice to at least agree on what a patch would look
like. Again, I am not volunteering to write it. But for example, is there
agreement this would involve a new copier variable (as discussed in my plan
linked above)?
What you suggest there seems right to me. But I'm not expert on that
sort of issue.
