needed, at the cost of some performance of course. But somebody has to
do it.
However, I agree that it would be great if LyX kept track of the
number of words written since the file was last opened, or a counter

This would be more complicated IMO, but maybe because I do not
understand what you mean.
The idea was to provide not only absolute but also differential statistics.
I have heard people track their writing progress by measuring how many
words they have written per day. Maybe LyX could some day provide such
statistics as well.
